With the 2018-19 Premier League approaching, there are a handful of clubs that made their teams stronger in the transfer window in the attempt to challenge the reigning champions, Manchester City. Even though there are 19 other teams that want to win the Premier League Title, there is no bigger challenger this upcoming season to Manchester City on paper than Liverpool FC.
With all the moves the club has done over the past several months, will it be enough to end the title drought and win the Premier League Championship for the first time in club history?
With a front three of Mohamed Salah (44), Roberto Firmino (27), and Sadio Mane (20) combining for 51 goals in all competitions last season, it’s no wonder why some believe Liverpool can challenge Manchester City offensively. With Philippe Coutinho sold to Barcelona during the middle of the season, Firmino and Mane helped Salah fill the void of the loss of Coutinho. If Salah can prove that last season was not a fluke, and Firmino and Mane can continue the pace that they were on last season, this team will have the potential to do some serious damage this upcoming season.
Outside of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin, who is expected to miss most of the 2018-19 Premier League season with a knee injury, Liverpool’s midfield looks to make an impact this upcoming season with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane leading the position. In addition, the supporting cast includes veterans like Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Adam Lallana, as well as some new faces like Naby Keita and Fabinho.
Last season, one of Liverpool’s biggest issues was on the defensive front. Simply put, there was no leader when it came to defense. Throughout the season, that all changed with the signing of Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton. This upcoming season, Van Dijk will be the anchor of the Liverpool defense with players like Andrew Robinson, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Dejan Lovern.
During the champions league finals, goalie Loris Karius made two costly mistakes that cost Liverpool the game. After the game, fans were demanding an elite goalie that can take them to the next level. In the offseason, the team delivered by signing Alisson Becker from Roma, making him the most expensive goalie of all-time at £65 million.
With Becker, Liverpool now has one of the top goalies in the world. The amount that they paid for him seems crazy, but if Becker can produce, it will be all worth it.
Last season, the team finished fourth in the Premier League with a record of 21-5-12, finishing with 75 points and qualifying for the Champions League. Throughout the Premier League season, Liverpool picked up some quality wins, which was highlighted by a win over Manchester City.
After the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, it was obvious that going into the offseason, Liverpool had to spend money on the transfer market in order to improve. By doing so, the expectations will now be at an all-time high.
If Liverpool can’t manage to hit their strides, several other teams that could easily make some noise this season, such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham. Looking at those teams, Liverpool seemingly has a better chance, on paper of course.
Liverpool has the ability to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League Title. With that said, the team has not played a regular season game to date, and it will take a few months before we can analyze anyone’s chances.
