Calvin Johnson Plans To Retire?

Rumors were going around the league, that Detroit Lions Star Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson was thinking about retirement this offseason. Adam Schefter reported today that Johnson told his family and informed coach Jim Caldwell that this season will be his last season.

This season Johnson had 88 catches, 9 touchdowns for 1,214 yards. Even though the Lions finished 7-9, 3rd place in the NFC North, Johnson had great numbers, having over 1000 receiving yards and close to double digit touchdown receptions.

Lions will be losing the most important part of the offense in Johnson. The team depends on him to put up double digit touchdown receptions and over 1000 receiving yards and he has been consistent. With him now most likely gone, the team is going to be without an elite playmaker on the offense.

Johnson will always be remembered as one of the greatest receivers in NFL history to never play in the Super Bowl. He has been having injury problems for the past few seasons. The human body can only take so much on the football field.

With Johnson most likely retired, he will have more time to spend time with his family and his kids. Like a lot of retired football players, Johnson might become a sports analyst at ESPN, NFL Network, CBS or Fox. Johnson deserves this retirement. It just stinks that his career is most likely ending while he is still in his prime.

One person on the Lions that will miss Johnson a lot will be quarterback Matthew Stafford. Johnson was Stafford number one go to guy at wide receiver. Stafford will have a new number one guy in Golden Tate, but he alone will not have the impact that Johnson had.
