After a report came out last month that Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson was thinking about retirement this offseason, the team made it official on Tuesday, announcing that the star receiver is retiring from football after 10 seasons in the league.

In 16 games this past season, Johnson had 88 receptions, 1,214 yards and 9 touchdowns. In a losing season, Johnson proved he is still an elite receiver. Even though he has been dealing with injuries, catching for over 1,000 yards for the sixth straight season.

Johnson has proven season after season, consistently catching for over 1,000 yards. Burning secondaries with his speed, and his ability to get down field for the long passes, Johnson has been the franchise player for the Lions ever since getting drafted by the team in ’07.

Now that Johnson has officially retired, receivers will now step up for his absence on the field. Look for Golden Tate to step up, since he is now the number 1 go to receiver in Detroit. It would not hurt for the team to go after a wide receiver in the free agency market or even the draft.

This is a big loss to the Lions, losing the number one target in their passing game in Johnson. He was a leader on and off the field, producing pro bowl numbers almost every season.

It is safe to say that Johnson retired at an very early age of 30 years old, most players keep playing at 30. Maybe Johnson’s body reached its point. Now that he is retired, he will have more time to spend with his family and his kids. It would not be a surprise if Johnson takes a sports casting job at ESPN, NFL Network, Fox Sports, or CBS.
