After signing him to a one year deal this offseason, Chris Johnson has been impressive with Arizona Cardinals this season.

According to multiple reports, the team has been so impressed with Johnson this season that the team and Johnson have already begun discussing about a contract extension. Both sides are not close to agreeing on a new deal, but a deal could get done before he hits the free agent market this offseason.

In 7 games played this season, Johnson rushed for 567 yards and 3 touchdowns on 111 carries. With the chances that Johnson has gotten this season with the team so far, he has made the most of it. Running for big gains, being a consistent runner in seven games played.

He has been taking snaps away from starting running back Andre Ellington, who is playing better than him this season.

The negotiation talks are a good sign for Johnson, considering that he was thinking about retiring after getting injured this offseason before getting signed by Arizona.

Even though Johnson is past his prime with the Tennessee Titans days at age 29, there is still some upside to him. He has solid speed and could be used in short-yardage situations. For a few seasons, he was known for breaking out into big runs, but has began to decline in recent years. The problem with Johnson is that he has a reputation of getting into trouble off-the-field and not producing the way the team wants him to.

Seeing how Johnson is playing this season, it is a good idea for Arizona to try to get him locked up now. It has been working out so far for the team, as Johnson has given the team a good option this season at running back. If he can keep up the numbers that he has been producing this season, expect him to be locked up sooner rather then later.

On the Johnson side of things, he has been performing his best season ever since leaving Tennessee. The chance he’s receiving must of really motivated him to become the running back that he once was. This was just a tryout deal for Johnson, and he is making the most out of this. The thoughts of him retiring now must be gone seeing how he has performed this season.
