Starting safety Antonio Allen, a backup for the New York Jets, who was a very valuable player due to his versatility in the field, will miss the entire season after tearing an Achilles’ tendon Thursday in practice.

Allen has played in 38 games, with 2.5 sacks and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. He’s also a contributor on special teams.

With only one backup safety player, the Jets likely will look into adding another player to their roster.

Allen’s greatest moment with the Jets came in 2013, when he returned an interception of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady 23 yards for a touchdown. That is the only interception of Allen’s career.

Allen’s injury is the Jets’ third prominent injury of this training camp, in only seven total practices.
