The Angels have lost Andrelton Simmons briefly at least as its been announced Simmons needs surgery, Simmons tore a ligament in his thumb. The team said it would have an update following the surgery to repair the UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) in his left thumb. He will be placed on the DL.
Simmons was hurt when he landed awkwardly on his glove hand while diving to stop a grounder hit by Evan Longoria, in the third inning of Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He immediately left the game, Simmons is one of the majors’ best fielders. He won two Gold Glove awards with the Braves before they traded him to Los Angeles in the offseason.
Simmons has fielded strongly with Los Angeles too. Though he made a throwing error in a loss Saturday. Simmons has struggled at the plate this season, batting .219 with eight RBIs. He had a hit Saturday to end an 0-for-21 skid.
Though he hasn’t been the best behind the plate this season, the Angels will likely miss Simmons’ strong fielding. They franchise will be hoping that he can recover quickly and that this isn’t season ending. Simmons’ first season with the Angels may end in disaster. Will Andrelton Simmons recover in time to help his team?
