All About The U : Are The Miami Hurricanes Back?
After a relatively quiet and lengthy string of years since their 2003 NCAA National Championship appearance, it seems as if the once prolific Miami Hurricanes football program is back on the map. The Hurricanes in 2016 had a sudden spark, going 9-4, and finishing second in the ACC. This led them to win their first bowl game since 2006 in the Russel Athletics Bowl against West Virginia with newly hired head coach Mark Richt.
In 2017, Miami made great strides in the right direction with red shirt junior QB Malik Rosier taking over for Brad Kaaya, with sophomore ILB Shaq Quarterman leading the defense. The Hurricanes were early favorites to actually win the ACC, starting 10-0, winning in convincing fashion over worthy opponents such as No 13. Virginia Tech and putting on a clinic against No 3. Norte Dame in a classic rivalry game.
The highest the Canes were ranked at any point in the season was at #2, just before collapsing in their last three games, losing to the unranked Pittsburgh Panthers 24-14, falling to the #1 Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship 38-3, and then losing in the Orange Bowl to the #6 Winsconsin Badgers by a score of 34-24.
The 2017-18 season gives fans of “The U” some optimism as to what is coming in the future. Going 9-4 and then 10-3 are steps in the right direction for the university. They had a very strong recruiting class, enrolling six four-star recruits, and receiving eight more to sign a letter of intent. In addition, this all occurred while recruiting five-star RB Lorenzo Lingard.
With plenty of familiar faces returnin, including DB Michael Jackson coming back for his senior season, Miami looks to take the final step to take over a extremely competitive ACC division, and take the final step and get into the post season. The school enters the 2018 season ranked #13. It seems to be a long climb up, but we have seen how unpredictable the sport of football is, especially in the NCAA. This year we could very well see if it really is “all about the U”.
