With just a few weeks until NFL Free Agency, there has been a lot of rumors going around between the Minnesota Vikings and star running back Adrian Peterson about the team not picking up his option for 2017 and letting him hit the open market. On Tuesday, the Vikings made it official announcing that the team will not be picking up Peterson’s $18 million dollar option for 2017 and will allow become a free agent once March 9th hits, ending his ten year run with the team.

In only 3 games this past season, Peterson rushed for 72 yards 0 touchdowns on 37 carries. After a phenomenal 2015-16 season, there were a lot of expectations for Peterson to have a fantastic 2016-2017, which was not the case following a nasty knee injury suffered against the Green Bay Packers.

Despite having one of his worst seasons statistically in his career, he is still a really solid running back. Peterson has great speed, he can cut through holes in the defense when the offensive line gives him space, and he can put up great numbers as long as he is healthy.

Following a 2013 campaign where his numbers began to decline, he played one game in 2014 in an injury riddled season. Despite having a comeback year in 2015 rushing for over 1000 yards and double digit touchdowns, there was still some controversy involving Peterson. In 2014, a report came out that Peterson was involved in child abuse case involving his son. In the report, Peterson struck his son disciplining him for cussing to another sibling which is what Peterson told his wife in the phone call that was released to the public.

On the Vikings side of things, it must have been hard to let go of someone like Peterson someone who carried the team on his back for several seasons and has been the face of the franchise for years. After what he has been involved in the past few seasons and the limited time of the field the past three seasons, it was the right decision to cut him and not pay him the $18 million that he was scheduled to make. Look for the team to look for his replacement this offseason. Even though the team cut him, do not be surprised if the team decides to bring him back at a pay cut, as he’s one of the most loyal players in Vikings history.
