The last time McGregor fought in the UFC, he was defeated by Khabib Nurmagomedov in an attempt for the Lightweight title. As for Cerrone, his last bout ended in a loss to Justin Gaethje.

Cerrone dropped back down to the Lightweight division, and has had success with wins against the likes of Anthony Hernandez and Al Iaquinta. On the contrary, he has seen defeat Gaethje and Tony Ferguson as well.

Both sides have been vocal about a match against the other, as the idea of McGregor and Cerrone in the octagon dates back to January of last year.
