5 Season Records the Warriors Hit against Charlotte

In what was one of the most dominant performances of the NBA season, the Golden State Warriors went off against a lackluster Charlotte Hornets on March 31st. Lead by Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, the Warriors won 137-90 in front of the hometown faithful at Oracle Arena.

The win was made just a little sweeter by the fact that the Denver Nuggets went down at home to the Washington Wizards. Nikola Jokic was ejected deep in the last quarter, while the Wizards held Denver to 28 second half points to take the win on the road. The two results see Golden State take a game lead with five games left and a crucial match-up against Denver on April 2nd.

Coming back to the game against Charlotte, the Warriors were hitting buckets from all over the court. You could not fault the Warriors outside of a Boogie Cousins ejection in the 2nd quarter. In fact, there were a few season records that the Warriors hit while sweeping the floor with the Hornets.

1. Biggest win of the season – 47 Points (Previously 39 vs San Antonio, 2/6/19)

While Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were lighting it up from all over the court, and the big men were crashing the paint like no tomorrow, the bench did more than enough to give the starters a rest. Quinn Cook had 21 points in just 23 minutes, while Jonas Jerebko grabbed 12 points for himself.

Andrew Bogut also had his most productive game in his short stint, grabbing six points and eight rebounds to go with a block in just 11 minutes. Kevin Durant was an assist away from a double-double, as was Draymond Green. According to the NBA wesbite, the team was 1 assist away from the NBA season record (42). When distribution is good, generally wins will be of a large nature. This win is no different.

2. Steph Curry with 5+ 3’s in eight consecutive games (Previously 7)

Steph Curry was lights out from downtown against Charlotte, shooting at 62.5 percent from long range. In fact, for most of this year he has been shooting rather well at close to 43.5 percent from beyond the arc.

His performance tonight, hitting five, set a new personal and franchise record with consecutive games of 5+ made 3-point shots. He had the NBA record until a certain bearded superstar in James Harden snapped it this season. If Steph can continue to get the ball and shoot like he has been, there is a chance that the record might be his once again before the end of the season.

3. Lowest total rebounds by opposing team – 28 (Previously 29 vs Detroit, Chicago)

In the first record, it was pointed out that Golden State’s tall timber were crashing the glass all night long. It was a dominant display by the Warriors, holding their opponents to the lowest number of total rebounds this season. It is also the third time this season that Golden State have held a team to under 30 rebounds for a game.

It helps when you have 50 total rebounds, while shooting at 60 percent from the field. The less shots that you miss, the smaller the chance that you will have rebounds go against you. It’s no secret, if you out-rebound the opposition, you probably will win. When you out-rebound the opposition by 22, and hold them under 30 total rebounds, you are well on your way to grabbing that win.

4. Lowest total FG made by opposing team – 30 (Previously 31 vs Oklahoma City, LA Clippers)

The next two season records are straight contrasts of one another, so we will start with a little defensive brag for the Warriors. Some fantastic defense, along with the aforementioned dominance in the paint kept Charlotte to 30 made field goals on 35% shooting. That percentage in itself is the 2nd lowest shooting percentage for any opposition, something that Jon Adams will be very pleased with.

The other thing of note here is that Golden State played with the majority of their bench for most of the last 15 minutes. As a matter of fact, Klay Thompson was the last starter to see the court. He walked to the bench in the last minute of the third quarter. That leads me on to the final 2018/19 regular season record the Warriors hit against Charlotte.

Klay Thompson also became the 16th highest 3-point shooter against Charlotte with his 6th made 3PT (New York Times)

5. Highest made 3PT percentage – 63.6% (Previously 54.2% vs Atlanta, Memphis)

Golden State haven’t shot about 60 percent from the arc since December 28, 2016 against New Orleans. If you want to add in the statistic of shooting 20+ made 3-point attempts whilst shooting over 60%, you have to go back to March 11, 2011. In that game against Orlando, Golden State were 21/35 for 60% on the dot. Dorell Wright, Monta Ellis and Steph Curry hit 19 3’s in that game.

Steph Curry is the only Warriors player still in Oakland from that game, while Dwight Howard is the only player outside of Curry still in the league from that game.

We have already spoken of Curry’s range, while Klay Thompson knocked down six of his own. Quinn Cook knocked down five from the bench, while Draymond Green hit a few corner bombs. The end result was 21/33 from long range for 63.6 percent. If Golden State can keep shooting like that throughout the finals, the NBA may as well give the Warriors the Championship now.
