All the major European leagues have finished with their seasons, and as fans, we turn our heads to the summer transfer window. No other team is more heavily linked with top players year in and year out than Manchester United, despite falling off from their dominance.
What if some of them transfers do happen? What does that mean for United or the league? We will never know how close some transfers are to being done deals, but we can have a pretty good idea.
Bruno Fernandes
Out of the three on this list, Bruno Fernandes is the most likely. There have been talks of Manchester United being heavily linked with him from multiple sources. It is said that his deal could be announced done any day.
It is not a secret that their rivals, Manchester City, have been linked with him as well. However, United are more likely to pay a higher price tag to secure the signing. He would make a perfect replacement in the midfield for Ander Herrera, who is leaving for PSG this summer. He offers more offensively with 23 goals and 12 assists in 41 games for Sporting CP this past season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
It’s clear that Manchester United need to upgrade the right back position. A struggling and aging Ashley Young will be catastrophic in that position for another year. Aaron Wan-Bissaka offers both youth and quality.
Manchester United are strongly linked with this signing and have been for quite some time. Even if they don’t manage to grab the Crystal Palace defender, they have a formidable alternative lined up. Either way, they are in the market for a right back and Wan-Bissaka is one of the best available. He had the third-most tackles in the Premier League last season.
Matthijs de Ligt
Out of the three, this signing would be the most effective. Last season, Manchester United conceded more goals than in any other Premier League season, which makes signing defenders a priority this summer. What they have to offer at the moment isn’t the standard United are used to.
Matthijis de Ligt has been tipped for a move to FC Barcelona. According to reports, United have fallen out of the race, but fans don’t seem to believe that. It’s rumored that it is between PSG and Barcelona, which still doesn’t completely rule United out, as they could have the money to outbid both sides.
He’s one of the best players in the world at his position and the most noteworthy part is that he’s only 19 years of age. Even at 19, he captained an Ajax side that made it to the semifinals of the Champions League.
What’s to come?
The reality is we won’t hear about these signings and their decisions on where to go until after the UEFA Nations League that features all three of these players (Portugal, England, and Netherlands respectively). Manchester United’s side would vastly improve with even one of these signings, but if they managed all three, then it could really elevate them to the level they need to be at.
The likelihood of signing all three is very slim. De Ligt is the biggest question mark on if he would make a move to United. The other two have real possibilities of ending up as a ‘Red Devil’.
