With the new NFL season approaching, there is a major concern in regards to player safety. With the MLB recently dealing with a dilemma involving multiple positive COVID-19 tests from the Miami Marlins, there is now a recent trend of NFL players electing to sit out of the 2020 season. Players have until August 3rd to decide whether to participate in the upcoming season.
Here is a list of players who will not participate in the 2020 season:
Baltimore Ravens
- The Ravens will be without offensive tackle Andre Smith for the 2020 campaign. He was recently signed to a one-year extension.
- Wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas has decided to opt-out from the upcoming season.
Buffalo Bills
- Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei has opted out of the upcoming season. The former first-round pick was scheduled to make $4.5 million this season.
Carolina Panthers
- Undrafted rookie linebacker Jordan Mack has opted out from the 2020 campaign.
Chicago Bears
- Defensive tackle Eddie Goldman has decided to opt-out from the 2020 season. Has been apart of the Bears roster since 2015.
Cleveland Browns
- Guard Drew Forbes has opted out from the 2020 campaign. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
- Undrafted offensive tackle Drake Dorbeck has chosen to opt-out this season.
Dallas Cowboys
- Undrafted free agent wide receiver Stephen Guidry will not participate in the upcoming season. He originally attended Mississippi State.
- Cornerback Maurice Canady is among the Cowboys players to sit out of the 2020 season. He was signed by Dallas in the offseason.
Denver Broncos
- Defensive tackle Kyle Peko will sit out of the 2020 season. It would have marked his fourth career NFL season.
Detroit Lions
- Defensive tackle John Atkins has opted out from the 2020 season.
Green Bay Packers
- Wide receiver Devin Funchess has elected to opt-out from the 2020 season. He was signed by the Packers earlier in the offseason.
Houston Texans
- The Texans will be without defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes for the 2020 season. He played in three games last season.
Kansas City Chiefs
- Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has decided to opt-out from the 2020 season.
- Running back Damien Williams has opted out from the upcoming season. Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire is expected to play an expanded role in his absence.
Minnesota Vikings
- Defensive tackle Micheal Pierce has opted out from the 2020 season. He signed with the Vikings on a three-year, $27 million deal this offseason.
New England Patriots
- Safety Patrick Chung has decided to sit out of the 2020 season.
- The Patriots will be without linebacker Dont’a Hightower this season. He and his fiance have a two-week old son.
- Patriots running back Brandon Bolden will not participate in the upcoming season.
- The team will be without offensive tackle Marcus Cannon for the 2020 season.
- Fullback Danny Vitale has decided to sit out of the upcoming season. He was signed after James Develin retired.
- Patriots offensive lineman Najee Toran has opted out from the 2020 season.
New Orleans Saints
- Tight end Cole Wick opted out from the 2020 season.
New York Giants
- Veteran offensive lineman Nate Solder has opted out from the 2020 campaign. The team previously drafted rookie Andrew Thomas in the 2020 NFL Draft.
New York Jets
- Offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi has opted out from the 2020 season.
Philadelphia Eagles
- Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has elected to opt-out from the 2020 season. The Eagles traded for Goodwin during the 2020 NFL Draft.
Seattle Seahawks
- Guard Chance Warmack will not participate in the upcoming season.
Tennessee Titans
- Offensive lineman Anthony McKinney is not participating in the upcoming season.
Washington Football Team
- Defensive end Caleb Brantley has opted out from the 2020 season.
