Auriemma Secures 1,000th Victory, Greatest NCAAW Coach of All Time?

With the UConn Lady Huskies win over Oklahoma’s Lady Sooners, Geno Auriemma has won his 1,000th game as a head coach, and has become the fastest coach to accomplish this feat. This is a historic accomplishment, as Auriemma now joins the great Pat Summitt, Tara VanDerveer, and Sylvia Hatchell (who also did it tonight) as the only four NCAAW coaches with 1,000+ wins.

The Lady Huskies got the win courtesy of an 88-64 win, where the team looked dominant and led for the fullness of the game. Oklahoma started to come back, but the Huskies responded with a 13-3 run to ice the game. Gabby Williams didn’t get to do as much as usual tonight, due to an injury scare and foul trouble, but managed to secure 10 rebounds and assists to accompany only 3 points.

Napheesa Collier fell one rebound short of a triple-double and scored 21 points. The Huskies out-rebounded the Sooners 41-32, had a better shooting percentage, and turned the ball over less.

Auriemma was hired by UConn in 1985, and prior to the hiring, the Huskies only posted one winning season in their history. With Auriemma, UConn has only posted one losing season, has finished above .500 for thirty straight seasons, and has gone undefeated on six occasions.

What makes Auriemma’s career all the more impressive is that he had to coach against Pat Summitt during the course of his tenure. Auriemma has coached 13 multi-time All-American players, as well as eight Player of the Years. He is also tied with Phillip Kahler as the fastest coach to reach 600 wins.

But the question stands, is Auriemma the greatest to coach in women’s college basketball?

Geno has a better win percentage than anyone else in the sport. With the accolades, win percentages, and the ability to win more games, I feel it’s safe to say Auriemma is the greatest women’s college coach of all time. On my behalf, I’m happy to see Auriemma and UConn accomplish a historic feat.
