Marcus Cannon Staying in New England

Even with the defensive struggles this season for the New England Patriots, the offensive line has been impressive due to Marcus Cannon stepping in for Sebastian Vollmer, who is out for the season with a hip injury.

The team rewarded Cannon on Tuesday by signing him to a five-year deal worth $32.5 million, with $14.5 million of that money guaranteed, according to insider Ian Rapoport.

Drafted by New England in the 5th round of the 2011 draft, he has spent the last six years with the team. Cannon is a staple to the offensive line this season alongside Nate Solder. Even though Solder is a good tackle, he can hold his own.

Cannon is a solid pass blocker, he knows uses his body to his advantage against defensive linemen, and is good in the trenches. He took the biggest chance he got at starting and made the most of it, which is impressive, since he was considered to be on the chopping block heading into the 2016 season.

The team has a reputation of trading players who want long term, big money deals who are in the last year of their contracts, such as Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones.

This proves that the team will award loyal players like Cannon new deals like this as long as he produces. The team locking him up in his prime years was smart, as long as he produces the same protection season after season, which looks possible.

On Cannon’s side of things, this is a pretty good sum of money for an offensive lineman to get paid. In order to prove he is worth it, he will have to keep protecting Tom Brady on his feet at all times, if he can do that, this will be a deal good for both sides.

With Cannon signing a new deal, one person that will most likely be the odd man out in that offensive line is Sebastian Vollmer, who is set to become a free agent this upcoming offseason.

Vollmer is on the last year of his four-year deal that he signed in 2012. With his recent injury costing him this sean and Cannon performing well in his absence, things do not look good for Volmer coming back to New England next season.
