Friday is the first day of NBA Free Agency, and there has been some moves already like Jordan Clarkson and Timofey Mozgov signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. One player that will not be leaving their team is free agent DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors.
DeRozan has reached a deal to keep him in Toronto. The deal is for 5 years worth $139 million. The Raptors are coming off losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the eventual NBA Champions Cleveland Cavaliers in 6 games.
Last season in 78 games played, DeRozan averaged 23.5 points per game, 4.0 assist per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. DeRozan last season played a big role in the Raptors having the season that they had.
DeRozan is a great shooting guard, passer, and a solid shooter that can average more than 20 points a season. DeRozan can attack the basket and shoot 3-pointers when he needs to.
On the Toronto side of things, it is a relief that both sides got this deal done on the first day of the free agency market, other than waiting till later in the offseason. The team did pay him a lot of money, but with the numbers that he produced for the past three seasons, it is well worth it.
Now that DeRozan is signed long term, the team can now spend the rest of free agency filling up the areas that the team needs to improve on to take the next step. DeRozan is one of the brightest young stars in the league, so it is not surprising that Toronto paid him that.
On the DeRozan side of things, now that he has been paid like a superstar, he will have to produce season after season showing that he is worth the money that the team is paying him. With the way that he has been performing, that should not be a problem for him.
DeRozan is still young enough and in his prime at age 26 years old that he can still improve as a player. DeRozan will be 31 when this contract expires, which is still a good age. He might be looking at another multi-year million dollar contract when this deal has expired.
The main focus of the offseason for the Raptors was getting DeRozan a new contract, and the team locked him up long term. It was obvious that he was coming back to Toronto, it was just a matter of when he was going to sign.
This was a great deal for both sides, as the team keeps DeRozan long term and DeRozan gets the money that he has been wanting.
With DeRozan now resigned, the team is keeping the main piece of the core that had so much success last season. Alongside Kyle Lowry, DeRozan put up close to 20 points a night with a great point guard in Lowry passing him the ball.
DeRozan didn’t do this alone, he has a great supporting cast in Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas, who are both great players that can make an impact.
As long as the team does not have any setbacks, expect the Raptors to make the playoffs next season since the future is bright in Toronto.
