Eagles, Fletcher Cox agree to historic contract extension

The Philadelphia Eagles and 25 year old defensive lineman Fletcher Cox has agreed to a huge contract extension. The extension is 6 years $103 million but that’s not the historic part, the guaranteed amount, $63 million is. This is the largest monetary guarantee for a non-QB in NFL history. The Eagles are guaranteeing Cox approximately 61% of the money penned on the contract.

Cox made the pro bowl in the 2015 season. Cox had skipped the past month of OTAs as he and his agent worked on getting an extension. A week ago, Cox reported to the NovaCare Complex. Now that the two parties have reached an agreement, Cox will likely attend OTAs regularly.

Cox was the first round pick for the Eagles in 2012. He went to the pro bowl after recording 9.5 sacks as well as leading the team with 24 tackles for loss in 2015. In four years, Cox has 22 sacks and 6 fumble recoveries. After playing at defensive end for three years in the 3-4 scheme, Cox is expected to transition to a 4-3 defensive tackle, returning to the defensive tackle role in Jim Schwartz’s defense. The Eagles will no doubt hope Cox is worth this contract, particularly with $63 million guaranteed, Cox is a promising talent and will likely be worth it, but all there is to do is wait and see.
