MLB Insider Jon Heyman reports that top international MLB Draft prospect Delvin Perez has failed a drug test and has fallen down several draft boards.
Perez, 17, has been linked to many teams. The Cincinnati Reds, who hold the second overall pick in Thursday’s draft, were one of those teams, according to Heyman. ESPN’s Keith Law reports that the drug that Perez tested positive for was not marijuana.
Perez hit .556 in the Victor Pellot Excellence Tournament and was named MVP. He’s a guy with a ton of potential at the dish but also brings amazing defense and has drawn comparisons to 2015 AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa.
This will no doubt move Perez down the draft boards. It’s a shame, but that’s how it works these days. Teams are hesitant to touch a kid who has anything about drugs linked to his name. Hopefully this isn’t another Raul Mondesi Jr. and he tested positive for cough medicine. Hopefully Delvin learned his lesson regardless.
