Just two days away from NHL trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs are a team to watch for leading up to the deadline. The team has been trading veteran assets for younger players and draft picks. The team sent James Reimer and Jeremy Morin to San Jose Sharks for Alex Stalock, Ben Smith, and a fourth round pick in 2018. If the Sharks make it to the Stanley Cup Finals in ’18, the fourth round picks turns into a third round pick. According to Pierre LeBurn, there will be no salary retained in this deal

In 29 starts this season, Reimer has a record of 11-12-7, 2.49 GAA and a .918 save percentage. Splitting starting goalie time with Jonathan Bernier, Reimer played pretty well, producing a lot better numbers in goal than Bernier has this season. Reimer has given the team a good chance to win every start he gets.

The Leafs is in rebuilding mode right now. Reimer has the better trade value out of the two goalies, so the team will more value for Reimer then for Bernier. With getting his contract off the books, it gives the team some salary cap which will be helpful to make some moves this upcoming offseason.

The Sharks are getting a good goalie in Reimer who can keep his team in games, he has proven that all season to backup starting goalie Martin Jones. In the playoffs, you need two solid goalies in net in order to go far. That is what the team is getting with Reimer, the team now has a one-two punch in net. For the first time in his NHL career, Reimer really has a legit chance of competing for a playoff contending team. With San Jose most likely going to be in the playoffs, that will motivate Reimer to play at his highest level in order to help the team win a cup.   Reimer will have to compete for start with Jones.

This trade works well for both teams, right now the Sharks are a playoff contending team the team knows what it is getting in Reimer. He is someone who could come in and produce good numbers when he is in net. That is a good thing to have for a playoff contending team, two goalies that you can trust every start to produce good numbers for whoever is in the net.

In the future, this trade works for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This trade gives them some flexibility in the salary cap this upcoming offseason. The team should be active this offseason, in the free agency market with Reimer contract off the books. In order to make the team an even better team next season.
