After Sunday night’s heartbreaking overtime loss to the Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots got great news regarding to tight end Rob Gronkowski.
The tight end left the game in the fourth quarter of the game holding his right knee. After an MRI, it was confirmed that the injury is only a bone bruise to his knee.
New England went on to lose the game in overtime 30-24, dropping to 10-1. The injury will have him out likely for a few weeks.
In 11 games this season, Gronkowski has 57 receptions, 931 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns. After winning the Super Bowl last year, the Patriots had a good chance of repeating as champions.
The biggest reason why the team was doing so well is because Gronkowski has been playing outstanding this season. Gronk has leadthe team in touchdowns and receiving yards this season.
In a season filled with injuries to receivers, Gronkowski has been the team’s number one option and most reliable target, even as a tight end.
Ever since getting drafted in 2010, Gronkowski has changed the game for tight ends. He has great hands, being that he is so tall he can push off a lot of defenders in his way. When he is 100 percent healthy, the guy can catch for over 1,000 yards and double digit touchdowns.
Off the field, Gronkowski is known to having a lot of fun (much like quarterback Johnny Manziel).
The difference between Manziel and him is that Gronk has proven already that he can play at a high elite level. When you play at a high elite level, the actions you do off the field does not matter as much.
Another great thing about Gronkowski is that he has the ability to burn the secondary for a big catch gaining in big yards down the field. Do not underestimate his blocking ability as well. Although he is a tight end that plays like a receiver, he can also block very well. In only six seasons, he is third in NFL history for touchdowns as a tight end.
New England is really lucky that the news came back as a bruise and not a tear. With it only being a bruise, he will only miss a good 2-3 weeks (most likely 1-2 weeks). The team needs him for the home stretch known as the playoffs in January.
The Patriots will be hoping to win the franchises second straight Super Bowl title, and fifth title since Tom Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe.
Gronkowski is Brady’s favorite target, so having the guy healthy and at 100 percent with the receivers coming back soon is vital. The team will have a great chance of winning back to back titles come January.
